Seize, 2026.
This work was created for the conference Extending Horizons. Panoramic Vision and Photography, jointly organized by the French National Institute for Art History (INHA) and the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), Richelieu site, in Paris. On 16 April 2026, it was presented on the empty shelves of the former Maps and Plans room at the BnF Richelieu site. Each print was displayed horizontally on Basico Plus cardboard supports with rounded corners, measuring 33 x 48 cm.
Seize is based on the work Fata Morgana (29.08.2023) (2024), which consists of two photographs I took while crossing the Dover Strait aboard a sailing vessel. It is composed of eight repetitions of each image from this diptych. Presented horizontally, the work forms a broken, fragmented, or faux panorama of the Dover Strait. It questions the possibility of omniscient knowledge through the photographic panorama, employing photography as a boundary-breaking rather than a boundary-making machine. By turning the Strait into a space of unknowing, Seize seeks to contribute to both the reinvention and the redefinition of possible spaces.
As the result of a donation, a diptych of madder toned cyanotypes outside the numbered edition is now part of the collection of the BnF Richelieu site and is available for public consultation. A further statement on this work (in French), can be consulted here.
A sequence of sixteen blueprints, toned with homemade madder emulsions, and washed in the darkroom with rainwater. Paper: BERGGER Cot 320. Each print measures 28 x 41,5 cm. Unframed.
