Thirty-Three Blueprints for the Right not to Drown, 2023

Elaborating on my central claim (in the Ground Sea book) that each person should enjoy the fundamental Right to Be Reborn, this work of art introduces an equally fundamental right that is intimately connected to it − the Right not to Drown. This work consists of thirty-three cyanotypes that I hand-produced in the darkroom. Its images are based on negatives of three photographs that I took while sailing in the English Channel between 2018 and 2021. This installation literally embodies my concept of the weak image. It is to be combined with a partly self-illustrated text, written in the form of a letter to the fictitious Dutch art critic Remco van den Berg, and dated 23 April 2023. This letter was published in J. Stafford, H. Trüper, and B. Wolf, Moral Seascapes (Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2024), pp. 229-246.
